How can you help an adopted child through divorce?

No one wants to have to go through a divorce, especially when it's going to affect their family. Whether you have stepchildren, adopted children or biological kids, everyone is affected when you divorce.

If you have an adopted child, this is something you will need to consider carefully. Adopted children have already, in many cases, felt a sense of loss by losing their biological parents. They may be worried about being abandoned or feel scared about what will happen if you and your spouse divorce.

Their feelings are legitimate, and they have to be addressed. So, what can you do to help your child feel more comfortable with the separation of your family?

1. Be clear that they're not going anywhere

It's important that you and your spouse are clear to your child that they are loved and will continue to be loved in the future. Even though you'll have more than one home for them to live in, that doesn't mean that you or your spouse no longer loves them or that you don't want to have them in your life.

2. Be honest about what's going to happen

You and your spouse should be honest about the custody arrangements you want to make. By giving your child this information, you'll help reduce their fears because they'll know what to expect.

3. Give your child input

While you don't want your child to make all the decisions, you can give them input in some ways so that they feel they have some control. From picking out a new bedroom to helping with the custody schedule, you can find a way to work together and make the situation easier.
