How can you recognize a risk of parental kidnapping?

Child custody is something that can be difficult to arrange for some parents. Both parents may disagree on custody arrangements, and one might be angrier than the other about the resulting agreement after divorce. While most parents deal with disappointment and frustration by taking cases back to court or negotiating more with the other parent, some others try to take matters into their own hands.

Parental kidnapping is something that no parent should have to be worried about, but in today's world, it is easier than ever to travel with children and to reach destinations you might never be able to locate. Parents who feel they're being pushed away sometimes do try extreme measures to get time with their kids. For some, that means going as far as to kidnap their own children.

Parental kidnapping is what it sounds like. It's when one parent takes a child without the other's knowledge and without the legal right to do so. They may flee the area and stay in the U.S. Sometimes, they flee the country. That's why it's important for parents to know the signs of a potential kidnapping and to call the authorities and their attorneys immediately.

What are some signs that a parent may try to flee (or has fled) with their children?

There are some signs of parental kidnapping including:

  • Sudden requests for passports or documents that could be needed in another state or country, such as medical records or school records
  • Travel plans that the custodial parent did not know about or was not informed of
  • Children who are missing from school and were picked up by the other parent unexpectedly

Of course, there are many others, too. If your children are missing, make sure you call 911 right away, then dial your attorney for further help.
